Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) have become the backbone of community finance in many villages across Rwanda. In these groups, women, men, and youth gather weekly to save, lend, and support one another.
It’s a sunny Wednesday mid-morning in Kamurekezi village, Kamonyi District, Rwanda. Members of the Turengereubuzima Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) group have gathered for their weekly meeting, a time to pool savings and access low-interest loans from their collective fund.

The impact of education extends far beyond the classroom. It empowers children to thrive despite the challenges their communities may face. In an effort to ensure children in vulnerable communities have access to inclusive, quality education, ForAfrika invested over Rwf 88 million (approximately USD 60,757) in the construction of the Teta Kibondo Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre.

In Gahungeri village, Niyonsaba Didacienne, a 39-year-old mother of two, is steadily regaining hope for a better life following the death of her husband. Today, she leads the Abunzubumwe Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), a 32-member group. This is after attending training and mentorship on entrepreneurship, financial literacy organised by ForAfrika in her community. VSLAs are small member-managed microfinance groups that empower individuals living in poverty to build savings and access low-interest loans.

Our project doesn't just aim to solve problems; it seeks to unlock the full potential of rural communities, fostering economic growth and self-reliance. By blending cutting-edge technology with deep respect for local traditions, we're writing a new chapter in Rwanda's development story.

Behind him are the distinct sounds of a band practising. “Once you are inside here, there are no visitors, only family,” he says with a
