Storms and flash floods in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State, North West, and Limpopo

Families across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State, North West, and Limpopo are in crisis after devastating floods swept through their communities. Homes have been destroyed, belongings washed away, and thousands are left with nothing. Many are without food, shelter, or basic necessities, and the situation is worsening by the hour.

On the 25th of February 2025, heavy rains characterised by extensive flooding due to waterlogged soils were excessively experienced in KwaZulu Natal and other provinces like Gauteng, Free State, North West, and Limpopo province. These extreme weather conditions have resulted in widespread flooding, infrastructure destruction, and displacement of families across multiple municipalities. A total of 6,722 households and more than 36,610 people have been affected in the above-mentioned provinces. The above provinces have been experiencing sporadic flooding and mudslides since the 18th of February 2025 and the ground saturated with water has exacerbated flooding incidents in the different provinces, with KwaZulu Natal being hardest hit.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued early warnings regarding flash floods, strong winds, and prolonged rainfall, which have since materialised into severe weather incidents. Emergency response teams have been deployed to assess the situation and provide immediate relief to affected communities. Disaster Response Teams remain on high alert since the South Africa Weather Service (SAWS) also warned of harsh weather conditions in multiple provinces earlier today on the 27th of February 2025.

This number went up from 6 which was previously reported by the Ethekwini Municipality Disaster Management Team.
