Khulani was founded by Bongiwe’s late mother, and continuing her legacy is a promise she proudly keeps. “We dreamed of this together,” she says. “An affordable, nurturing space for our community’s children.” Add a line that puts in context the ECD centres – mostly in low income neighbourhoods, a lifeline for many low-income families who need somewhere safe to leave their children but cannot afford high-end care centres or live in help.

Each morning begins with songs and playful exercise, moments that help teachers monitor children’s wellbeing while keeping them active. Then comes the most anticipated part of the day: breakfast time. The children wait for bowls of ForAfrika’s fortified porridge, a nutritious meal that many families depend on.
