A year-long journey from survival to enterprise: nine groups of women living with HIV in Rwanda.
Before ForAfrika and WeActx for Hope came alongside her, Aline* had no work, no savings, and no clear path forward. Living with HIV, she faced not only economic hardship, but also the social isolation and stigma that often deepen vulnerability.
Her story reflects the Dynamic Development Continuum in practice. Transformation did not begin with enterprise alone. It began with strengthening the foundations required for progress: health, confidence, community and belonging.
Through its partnership with WeActx for Hope, ForAfrika supported 120 women living with HIV across Kigali and Kamonyi to strengthen their economic resilience. Participants were organised into nine entrepreneur groups, received training in savings methodologies, business planning, financial management and leadership, and were supported to launch group-based enterprises aligned with their interests and local market opportunities. These activities strengthened the foundations for self-sufficiency while creating pathways towards market participation and longer-term commercial viability.
The intervention was intentionally integrated. Health and psychosocial support created a foundation of stability. Savings groups strengthened financial discipline and social capital. Business training and enterprise support then created pathways towards income generation and economic participation. This integrated approach was critical because the barriers these women faced were interconnected. Economic hardship, stigma, poor mental wellbeing and limited opportunity reinforced one another. Addressing these challenges together created impact that was not simply additive, but multiplicative.
For Aline, this meant becoming part of Shining Catering, one of the enterprises formed through the programme. For others, it meant establishing businesses in tailoring, hairdressing, retail, fruit and vegetable sales, digital financial services and food services.
The economic outcomes were significant. Average monthly income increased from approximately 5,700 RWF to 36,700 RWF. Across the groups, 1,402,346 RWF was mobilised through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), creating access to savings and internal lending mechanisms that had not previously existed.
By the end of the project, 91% of participants were actively applying the business and life skills gained through training to run or support income-generating activities.
However, the income figures alone do not tell the full story.
The impact extended beyond earnings. Women reported greater confidence, stronger peer support, improved household decision-making and a renewed sense of agency. The groups became safe spaces where stigma diminished, belonging increased, and women increasingly saw themselves not through the lens of vulnerability, but through opportunity and contribution.
This illustrates how communities move along the Dynamic Development Continuum. As foundational assets strengthen, resilience deepens. As resilience deepens, communities become better positioned to sustain progress independently.
For Aline and many others, the journey was about more than generating income. It was about restoring dignity, rebuilding confidence and creating the conditions to thrive.
