ForAfrika has signed a new partnership agreement with Sasol to improve food security, strengthen agricultural livelihoods and create new economic opportunities for communities in Vilankulo District, Inhambane Province. The partnership builds on a history of collaboration between ForAfrika and Sasol across Inhambane Province.

Previous investments have supported community development through initiatives such as the construction of football fields and other social infrastructure, creating safe spaces for recreation while strengthening community wellbeing. The new irrigation systems expand this partnership by focusing on food security, agricultural productivity and sustainable livelihoods.

The new partnership agreement, signed in May 2026, forms part of the second phase of the Local Development Agreements (ADL II), an integrated initiative supporting the social and economic development of 70 communities across the districts of Inhassoro, Govuro and Vilankulo.

As part of the partnership, ForAfrika will lead the construction of five irrigation systems in Vilankulo between July 2026 and June 2027. The infrastructure will provide farming communities with more reliable access to water, helping increase agricultural productivity, improve crop resilience and strengthen local food systems.

The irrigation initiative contributes to Sasol's broader social investment strategy, which is built around four interconnected pillars: Community Social Development, Income Generation and Employment Creation, Human Capital Development, and Enterprise Development and Local Procurement.

Reliable irrigation is expected to enable farmers to extend growing seasons, diversify crop production and reduce the impact of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Alongside improved agricultural production, the project will generate employment opportunities during construction, strengthen local technical capacity and create opportunities for local enterprises to participate in implementation.

ForAfrika's contribution to the programme reflects its commitment to supporting communities in building sustainable livelihoods through practical, locally led solutions. By improving access to productive infrastructure, the partnership aims to help farming households increase their incomes while contributing to long-term community resilience.

The construction of the five irrigation systems marks another step towards creating thriving rural communities where families have the resources and opportunities to produce food, strengthen local economies and build a more secure future.
