Central African Republic

The Central African Republic remains one of the world’s poorest nations, with nearly 70% of households living on less than $2.15 per day.

Central African Republic context

Inflation and regional instability have driven food prices up by 22%, exacerbating poverty and deepening humanitarian needs. Nearly half the population—2.8 million people—requires urgent assistance.

Women and girls face acute vulnerabilities: 96% of gender-based violence (GBV) survivors are female, with over 11,000 GBV cases reported in the first half of 2024. Early marriage affects 61% of women aged 20–24, and only 11.4% of parliamentary seats are held by women. Maternal mortality remains high at 692 deaths per 100,000 live births, and adolescent fertility is among the highest globally, with 163 births per 1,000 girls aged 15–19.

Children are at risk of exploitation, recruitment by armed groups, and early marriage. Persons with disabilities—15% of the population—face severe educational exclusion, with 73.8% illiteracy and limited access to inclusive infrastructure.

Environmental challenges include recurrent flooding, affecting over 85,000 people in 2023, and deforestation around displacement sites. Politically, CAR struggles with fragmented governance and armed group control, while regional conflicts in Sudan and Chad further destabilise the country.

Humanitarian priorities remain focused on emergency aid, resilience-building, and long-term solutions, especially for women, children, and marginalised groups. However, the landscape is evolving. While urgent needs continue, communities are increasingly ready to move beyond relief. What is needed now is a shift from fragmented aid efforts to integrated, sustainable development.

ForAfrika in Central African Republic

ForAfrika established operations in CAR in 2022 fuelled by the large-scale humanitarian needs and in response to the food security emergency in the country.

ForAfrika CAR is dedicated to making a significant and lasting impact by reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutritional security for vulnerable rural households, and facilitating economic empowerment for women and youth. Our efforts are aligned with the Central African Republic government’s development initiatives and are designed to complement and enhance these efforts effectively.

ForAfrika’s Integrated Programming Approach: Our approach embraces locally led, integrated initiatives at each stage to comprehensively address community development challenges and strengthen community resilience. This ensures a systematic and coordinated effort, where interventions are carefully organised and layered within and across our programmatic areas.

Programme sectors in Central African Republic

ForAfrika has diverse experience in supporting communities to strengthen their food security and livelihoods and increase household income, mainly for women and youth in rural and semi-urban areas.

Farmers’ associations are a lifeline for many in CAR. Despite the dire living conditions, farmers organise themselves into small agricultural associations that aid in their survival. They do this by pooling resources including to buy livestock or plough fields. Their efforts, however, are often stymied by animal and crop disease, logistics, lack of know-how and portable water.

ForAfrika has been a steadfast partner in CAR’s development, particularly in addressing the agricultural and livestock sectors’ challenges. Our initiatives are designed to be culturally appropriate and adaptable to the unique contexts of the communities we serve.

We are implementing integrated, resilient livestock and agricultural interventions to sustainably improve rural livelihoods and incomes. This includes vaccinating goats and sheep, and spraying food crops to prevent pest infestations, all aimed at boosting productivity and creating lasting impact.

We are also working with the farmers’ associations to establish linkages to local markets, enabling farmers to sell surplus produce and generate income, thereby improving household resilience and food security in the face of recurring shocks. With funding from ForAfrika’s German affiliate (Euros 40,000) and building on ForAfrika’s Program Integration Framework, the project will target women, youth, returnees, and persons with disabilities. The programme will integrate sustainable agriculture, savings and income generation, and inclusive governance structures.

Through the farmer associations, we have set up Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) which are community-run microfinance groups that enable members to save money, access low-interest loans and build financial resilience. By pooling resources and managing funds democratically, VSLAs promote economic empowerment, social cohesion, and sustainable development at the grassroots level. Since 2024, we have helped established 10 VSLA groups which we support with trainings.
