Central African Republic: Food security crisis

ForAfrika will work with local veterinarians in CAR to ensure animals are well taken care of so that smallholder farmers are able to produce crops and provide for their families.

At least 50% of the population is not eating enough and only 30% have access to clean drinking water. This is an ongoing crisis due to lack of resources.

Disaster overview

Farmers are struggling to produce food as disease continues to wipe out crops and livestock. Together we can immediately support these communities to boost their massive efforts. They know what works, they just need more resources.

In one of the world’s most vulnerable countries, farmers’ associations are a lifeline for many, but they need important resources.

  • Veterinary intervention to treat livestock timeously to avoid loss of these important family assets.
  • Engage the services of a reputable expert to identify disease and share best practice information electronically on cell phones.
  • Provide training in best practice, veterinary medicine and pesticides that allow farmers to familiarise themselves with diseases and adopt proven techniques.
  • Provide pesticides until farmers have adequate knowledge and are economically self-reliant to safeguard their own crops.
  • Provide ploughing oxen.
  • Provide linkages to local markets whereby farmers can sell their surplus produce.
