Empower 20 million Africans to sustainably provide for themselves by 2032.

ForAfrika in Ethiopia honoured by the Gofa Development Association Board

On July 22, 2024, two catastrophic landslides hit Kencho Shacha Gozdi kebele in Geze Gofa Woreda, claiming over 255 lives and displacing many residents. Triggered by heavy rainfall, the disaster displaced over 26,000 people, who are currently sheltered in Temporary Accommodation Centres (TACs), churches, host communities, and Farmer Training Centres (FTCs). The neighbouring Kencho Woyza kebele also suffered significant casualties and displacement.

In response, ForAfrika launched an integrated recovery and resilience program in the affected areas, focusing on both immediate recovery and long-term disaster risk reduction. Key components of the program include:

Promoting backyard agroforestry:
Engaging 20 model farmers and 400 follower farmers to integrate agroforestry practices into their farming systems, promoting sustainable land use and environmental restoration.

Introducing weather-resilient agriculture:
Enhancing community resilience to weather-related shocks while improving agricultural productivity through sustainable, adaptive farming techniques.

The program also embeds Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and afforestation measures aimed at stabilizing slopes and preventing future landslides. Comprehensive catchment management interventions combining physical and biological conservation methods have been implemented.

The initiative has produced significant positive outcomes, reducing the risk of landslides, restoring degraded land, and empowering farmers with tools, seeds, and seedlings. Farmers have also adopted nutrition-dense crops such as cassava, alongside coffee cultivation to diversify income sources and improve household nutrition.

In recognition of its impactful work, ForAfrika received a Certificate of Recognition from the Gofa Development Association Board. The certificate was jointly signed by Hon. Dr. Tesfaye Belgige, Board Chair and Member of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, and Professor Eyasu Elias, a distinguished scholar and senior professor at Addis Ababa University.

Breaking barriers at Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf

Just like spoken languages, sign languages differ from country to country. What might mean “break” in the United States can mean “toilet” in South Africa. That’s the first lesson teacher Nonhlanhla Nyovane cheerfully teaches us as we arrive at Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf.
